Newborn Session Prep Tips

It's hard to prep for perfection because as you know... babies are so unpredictable. :)  However, here are a few tips that can help.

  1. Try to keep them awake as much as possible prior to my arrival.  A sleepy baby is easier to pose and keep calm for photos.  A tip is to give them a extra long bath to tire them out!  Right after the bath is a good time to feed and coerce them back into that milk drunk sleep.  :)

  2. Keep the house warmer than usual and turn off any fans.  Cold spaces make it harder to do solo shots.  They will want to be warm when they aren't being snuggled up against parents.

  3. Open blinds and let as much natural light in as possible.

  4. Don't focus so much on cute outfits.  The best is a naked swaddled baby or a simple onesie.  You can embellish with beanies and bows if you like.

  5. Set aside any sentimental blankets, books, hand-me-downs or other items you want photographed with your babe.

  6. I know it's been a busy time but tidy up as much as possible.  I often use the parents bed/bedroom for shots as well as the nursery.  Weather permitting we will also step outside for some shots.

FAQ

When is the best time to book a newborn session?

The best timeframe for newborn sessions is within the first 7-10 days after delivery when possible. Don’t worry if it ends up having to be pushed back due to unforeseen circumstances though. Once you book we put a tentative date on the calendar and then firm of the details after your little one arrives.

What the heck should I wear?

First off... there is really no right or wrong.  These are your photos and memories so it's best to be yourself and dress how you feel most comfortable.  Being confident in what you're wearing is the first step for a great shoot!

For home sessions it's very common to stick with a nuetral soft palette but it's not necessary if you prefer bold and whimsical.  The only thing I would suggest avoiding is too much pattern, logos or words.  I wouldn't worry so much about baby outfits, most of the photos will be captured while the baby is swaddled.  Because I want each of my sessions to be unique, I typically use swaddle blankets, hats and accessories you have in the home.
