How to get married at the Travis County Courthouse (UPDATE!)

It’s been a couple of years since my last post and interview with Judge Chu about how to get married at the Travis County Courthouse. Judge Chu has since moved to the Probate Courthouse and Judge Rick Olivo is now presiding at Precinct 5 so I figured an update was needed.

First off, a common oversight is which location you are choosing when you schedule your courthouse ceremony. For the sake of this blog post I will share details on how to get married at Precinct 5… the historic Travis County Courthouse (my personal favorite)

How to get a marriage license ….

  • You can obtain a marriage license at any Texas County Clerks office, regardless of where you reside or follow the link to the online marriage application. Both parties appear together at the county clerk’s office located at 5501 Airport Boulevard, Austin, TX 78751 once an appointment is scheduled. Don’t forget to bring your proof of identity. For more information you can call 512.854.9188

  • In-Person ceremonies are conducted inside his courtroom by appointment at Justice of the Peace, Pct. 5 in the historic Travis County Courthouse located on the first floor of 1000 Guadalupe St, Ste. 112 Austin, TX. He is generally available every day including weekends, holidays, and after business hours/evenings. For more information you can call 512.854.9049

A few side notes….

  • Be sure to bring cash for payment to the Judge

  • You have 29 days to use the wedding license or you will have to repeat the process

  • If you have more than 10 guests let the judge know so he can see if using the 4th floor courtroom would be best (it’s bigger)

Photographing your courthouse ceremony…..

The ceremony itself only takes about 5-10 min. I typically go one of 2 ways…. we meet up early and take photos beforehand or wait for the bulk of the photos post ceremony. There are a few factors that help determine the best plan but also it’s just a matter of preference. When you’re ready to book, we can decide on the logistics then.

Where to take photos on your wedding day in Austin….

Depending on the package you go with will determine if we pop around spots close to the Courthouse or venture off to another location as well. The courthouse steps alone are iconic and photo worthy. We can make a lot happen just in that spot alone. Next to it is a park and a gorgeous Live Oak that provides shade when your ceremony is scheduled in the middle of the day.

Photo Locations to consider

  • The Courthouse itself and the park next to it

  • Seaholm District

  • The Capitol (Inside and/or Outside)

  • Butler Park (Austin Skyline Shot)

  • Book a stay at Commodore Perry Estate and get permission to shoot on the grounds
