When is the best time for Bluebonnet photos in Austin?

When Do Bluebonnets Bloom in Austin?

Bluebonnets typically bloom from late March to mid-April. The exact timing can vary depending on weather conditions such as rainfall and temperature during the preceding winter and early spring. Rainfall and how mild or harsh the winter was plays a huge role in the timing of the blooms and how rampant they will be.

I typically start scheduling these for the last week of March and into the first 2 weeks of April. That being said, if we do schedule a bluebonnet specific session and the bluebonnets bloom early or arrive late, we can adjust as needed.

Ideal locations for wildflowers in Austin

Each year I go scout my favorite go to spots to see how they fair for the bluebonnets because each year the location and amount can change drastically. So when scheduling your session we will wait till the week of the shoot sometimes to decide on the exact meeting spot.

Wildflowers vs Bluebonnets Only

Let’s not forget the abundance of other WILDFLOWERS that bloom just after the bluebonnets have mostly gone away. To be honest, I personally prefer the mix of flora and colors to the bluebonnets only. So if you miss bluebonnet season, just know you have a lot to look forward to still booking a Spring Wildflower Session. The mix of flora and wildflowers typically start in early April and can go through the end of May.

What to Wear for Your bluebonnet Photoshoot

Choosing the right outfit can make your bluebonnet photos truly stand out. Here are some tips for what to wear:

  • Go for Neutral and Pastel Colors: Soft shades like white, beige, blush, and light blue complement the vibrant blue of the flowers.

  • Consider the Setting: Flowy dresses, denim, or casual outfits with a touch of rustic charm pair beautifully with the natural backdrop.

  • Accessorize Thoughtfully: Hats, boots, and simple jewelry can add personality without overwhelming the photo.

  • Coordinate for Group Photos: Choose outfits with a cohesive color palette to create a harmonious look for family or group pictures.
