Be (YOU)nique: What to wear for your family photoshoot
Family photoshoots arenβt just about capturing a face, itβs about capturing your unique style and personality. I like to encourage a non-traditional approach to the age old question of βwhat to wearβ. Iβm here to encourage you β¦. you donβt need to match! In fact, embracing individual styles will make your photos stand out AND when looking back at them years to comeβ¦ you will appreciate seeing those personalities come through in the photos. Here are some tips to help you in the process.
The photo on the right > is a great example of fall colors that pair well without matching. There are oranges, reds, yellows, stripes and polkadots!
Embracing individual personalities for the win! ^^
4. Textures and Layers: A nice touch
Textures and layers add visual interest to photographs. Mixing different textures such as knits, denim, linen, or lace can add dimension to your outfits. Layers like scarves, jackets, or cardigans not only keep you comfortable but also provide opportunities for varied looks throughout the shoot.
5. Comfort Is Key
Above all, prioritize comfort. It never fails that when clients wear clothes that feel comfortable and natural to themβ¦ it shows. Avoid clothing thatβs too tight or restrictive and doesnβt allow you to move with ease.
6. Accessories and Details
Accessorizing can elevate your outfits and tie everything together. Consider adding accessories like hats, belts or jewelry that complement your outfit and personal style. Again, the key is to be yourself so if jewell isnβt your thingβ¦ no need to incorporate it.
7. Be Timeless
While itβs great to incorporate current trends, aim for a timeless look wonβt date your photos. Avoid logos and words or crazy graphic tee shirts. I would also suggest avoid wearing technology like Apple Watches that can date the photo and stand out a little too much :)
1. Embrace individual personalities
Each member of your family is different so let the outfits reflect that in some way. If one family member is more monochrome while another loves color and patterns then donβt be afraid to mix the two. Diversity adds depth and interest to your photos, showcasing who you truly are.
2. Coordination: YES. Matching: Not so much
Instead of everyone wearing the same color or style, use coordinating colors and/or patterns. You can go with a selection of 2-4 colors that work well together if you canβt imagine going rogue. For example, if one person wears a pattern with shades of blue, others can pick solid colors that harmonize with those shades. This creates cohesion without sacrificing individuality.
3. Consider the Location and Season
Take cues from your photoshoot location and the season when selecting outfits. I personally love the juxtaposition of a bit dressier outfits in an urban setting and then flowing casual dresses and outfits in a field or nature setting. Similarly, adjust your clothing choices to go with the season.
Color coordination theme⦠pick 2-4 colors and let everyone take it from there!
8. Have Fun and Be Yourself
Ultimately, the most important aspect of any family photoshoot is to have fun and be yourselves. When you feel comfortable and confident in what youβre wearing, it will show in the final images.
